Schwinn Airdyne Exercise Bike: an Oldie but Still a Goodie

The first thing that strikes you when you first lay your eyes on a Schwinn Airdyne exercise bike is its general appearance. The bike is about 4 feet long and 4 feet high, and weighs around 96 pounds. The size and weight might not be exceptional but the giant wheel in front of the exercise bike makes it look like an old-fashioned machine you’d normally find back in the 80s. There’s a reason though for the exercise bike looking like this: it looks old-fashioned because it is. Design-wise, not much has changed with the Airdyne models. The original model is chain-driven like an ordinary bike while the newer one is belt-driven. Aside from this, the only other difference between the two models is the digital monitor on the bike.

Great Full Body Workout

As mentioned, the newer model retains almost all the features of the older model. This means that you can also work out your upper body with the bike’s sturdy exercise arms. Most exercise bikes only provide workout for your lower body, but the Airdyne allows you to have a great full body workout because of this extra feature.

The Schwinn Airdyne has a simple system which everyone can understand and utilize. The bike uses a unique air-resistance system called the air-based resistance braking. When you pedal harder or faster, the bike offers greater resistance so you’ll be sweating more as you work out. If you want less resistance, you should pedal slower.

Other Features

Despite the Airdyne’s weight (96 pounds), its maximum user weight is 300 pounds. The bike is also equipped with a padded seat which is comfortable and can be easily adjusted. When setting up the height of the seat, make sure there’s a slight bend in your knees so you can maximize your lower body workout.

The Schwinn Airdyne exercise bike has a comprehensive computer console that gives you feedback on your workout through a small LCD. It provides information on the calories burned, calories per hour, RPM, workload level, time, distance traveled, and your heart rate.

An Oldie But Still a Goodie

Both the chain-driven and belt-driven Airdyne models are generally quiet, and both provide the kind of upper body and lower body workout that you need to stay fit and healthy. Unlike newer upright stationary bikes, the Schwinn Airdyne exercise bike is very reliable and functional, and is likely to last several years if you know how to maintain it properly. For its price (and despite its old-fashioned appearance), the Airdyne is a great exercise machine to have.
